The Truth About Unfermented Soy and Its Harmful Effects

Tuesday, February 12, 2008 by: Teya Skae, citizen journalist

(NaturalNews) With vegetarianism gaining increasing popularity from the 1970's, reaching its peak in the 1990's, soy has emerged as a 'near perfect' food, with supporters claiming it can provide an ideal source of protein, lower cholesterol, protect against cancer and heart disease, reduce menopausal symptoms, and prevent osteoporosis - among many other things. It seems like a good thing - or is it really?
How did such a 'healthy food' emerge from a product that in 1913 was listed in the U.S.Department of
Agriculture (USDA) handbook not as a food but as an industrial product?

According to lipid specialist and nutritionist Mary Enig, PhD, "The reason there's so much soy in America is because the soy industry started to plant soy to extract the oil from it and soy oil became a very large industry." There was a lot of soy oil and with it came a lot of soy protein residue as a left over by-product, and since they couldn't feed it to the animals, except in small amounts, they had to find another big market which, of course, was human consumption.

This excess soy production and its protein residue was the motivation for the multi-million dollars spent on advertising and intense lobbying of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which resulted in about 74 percent of U.S. consumers believing that soy products are healthy. Australia has traditionally prided itself as being a dairy consuming nation, due to the fact that we have such abundant supply of cattle. However, lactose intolerance is becoming a health concern recognised by the medical profession; accordingly, soy is becoming very popular as an alternative to dairy, following in the footsteps of US consumers in believing that all soy-based products have health benefits. In reality, the research that has concluded that all soy products are healthy is far from accurate, and very much skewed by economic motives.

Let's examine why soy products are far from healthy:

For greater clarity, soy products are classified into two main groups: fermented and unfermented. There are also another two sub-groups: organic and Genetically Modified (GM). The GM soy is to be avoided at all costs, as the hazards of GM are some of the worst innovations of modern day bio-technology. Not only are all GM products unhealthy to humans and animals but also to the normal plants that grow in the surrounding area, due to the natural process of winds causing cross-pollination, resulting in mutated species of what were once natural variations of plants. This topic is too vast to cover in this article but for more research, visit (http://www.non-gm-farmers.com) .

The unfermented soy category is a most problematic one. It includes soy products, such as tofu, bean curd, all soy milks, soy infant formulae, soy protein powders and soy meat alternatives, such as soy sausages/veggie burgers, made from hydrolysed soy powder.

So what is wrong with unfermented soy products?

Soy belongs to the family of legumes. Other members of the legume family include beans - such as adzuki, red kidney, navy, barlotti, etc., as well as chickpeas. Peanuts are included as well, as they are technically not a nut but a legume. All legumes and whole-grains - such as, rice, barley, oats, wheat and rye - contain amounts of phytic acid. Being a legume, soy contains a high amount of phytic acid. So, what's wrong with phytic acid? A number of things - yet, in some cases, phytic acid can also be beneficial.

Phytic acid's structure gives it the ability to bind minerals, proteins and starch, and results in lower absorption of these substances. Hence, phytic acid, in large amounts, can block the uptake of essential minerals, like calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, and especially zinc in the intestinal tract. Soy also inhibits the uptake of one of the most important minerals needed for growth and metabolism, iodine, which is used by the thyroid gland in the production of thyroid hormones.
However, for non-vegetarian men, phytic acid may prove to be quite helpful, due to its binding/chelating ability with minerals.

Since a large percentage of non-vegetarian adult males have excess iron, phytic acid would be helpful to them by binding the excess iron. But we need to bear in mind phytic acid will simultaneously bind other minerals, such as calcium, magnesium and zinc. In the case of children and menstruating women, the phytic acid in soy can be a serious negative, as women and children need iron. In women, iron is needed to replace the loss during their menses and in children iron is required for growth and development.

Apart from the phytic acid-related phenomena, there are additional factors that make soy an unhealthy choice.

Soy:

* contributes to thyroid disorder, especially in women

* promotes kidney stones

* weakens the immune system

* contributes to food allergies and digestive intolerance

Perhaps the most disturbing of soy's ill effects on health has to do with its phytoestrogens, which can mimic the effects of the female hormone, oestrogen. These phytoestrogens have been found to have adverse effects on various human tissues, and drinking only two glasses of soy milk daily for one month has enough of the chemical to alter a woman's menstrual cycle.

Soy is particularly problematic for infants and it would be very wise to avoid giving them soy-derived products, since it has been estimated that infants who are exclusively fed soy formula receive the equivalent of five birth control pills worth of oestrogen every day. Check out (www.westonaprice.org) to find some alarming research and statistics on what can go wrong when infants and children are regularly fed soy formula.

In order to derive some benefit from soy, consuming only fermented soy products - such as organic miso (mugi barley and genmai miso are the best), organic tempeh, soy sauce or tamari and natto - is the way to do it. This is because the phytic acid, which is inherent in soy beans, has been neutralized in the process of fermentation. Consuming fermented soy is very beneficial in recolonizing the friendly bacteria in the large intestine, which neutralizes the 'unfriendly' bacteria and allows for greater general assimilation of foods and nutrients.

So, fermented soy is of benefit and unfermented soy is not. It is not only soy that needs to be fermented but whole-grains as well. In fact, grains (apart from millet, buckwheat and couscous) and legumes are best consumed after soaking them for 48-72 hours prior to cooking, which allows fermentation to take place. The soaking of grains and beans is also advocated in the principles of macrobiotics, which is very popular amongst vegetarians. Yet many vegetarian restaurants do not have time or forget to incorporate this very important process in their vegetarian cooking and thus people who regularly eat out at vegetarian restaurants might develop severe mineral deficiencies due to the large consumption of phytic acid in their diet.

Another common fallacy is that soy foods couldn't possibly have a downside because Asian cultures eat large quantities of soy every day and consequently remain free of most western diseases. In reality, the people of China, Japan and other Asian countries eat very little soy. The soy industry's own figures show that soy consumption in China, Indonesia, Korea, Japan and Taiwan ranges from 10 to 90 grams per day. That is grams of soy food, not grams of soy protein alone. Compare this with a cup of tofu (250 grams) or soy milk (240 grams). Many Americans and Australians today would be consuming a cup of tofu and a couple of glasses of soy milk every day. They might also add veggie burgers to this, thinking they are getting their much needed protein intake. Infants on soy formula are probably the most disadvantaged, as that is their main source of nutrition and they ingest large amounts of soy relative to their body weight. Often the side effects are not noticed but, as they are growing up, runny noses, frequent colds, irritability, severe sugar cravings and food intolerance develop.

The summary below outlines the adverse effects of unfermented soy products:

* Trypsin inhibitors in soy interfere with protein digestion and may cause pancreatic disorders. In test animals soy containing trypsin inhibitors caused stunted growth.

* Soy phytoestrogens disrupt endocrine function and have the potential to cause infertility and to promote breast cancer in adult women.

* Soy phytoestrogens are potent anti-thyroid agents that cause hypothyroidism and may cause thyroid cancer. In infants, consumption of soy formula has been linked to autoimmune thyroid disease.
Vitamin B12 analogs in soy are not absorbed and actually increase the body's requirement for B12.
Soy foods increase the body's requirement for vitamin D.

* Fragile proteins are denatured during high temperature processing to make soy protein isolate and textured vegetable protein.

* Free glutamic acid or MSG, a potent neurotoxin, is formed during soy food processing and additional amounts are added to many soy foods.

* Soy foods contain high levels of aluminum which is toxic to the nervous system and the kidneys.

In contrast, consuming organic fermented soy products is quite beneficial. Consuming even small amounts of unfermented soy on a regular basis could cause some adverse effects in our body. Next time you consider drinking soy milk; perhaps instead consider oat milk, coconut milk or goat's milk. Some people who are allergic to dairy can tolerate goat milk and goat cheese products in small quantities. Replacing soy and regular milk with these alternatives allow us to enjoy our beverages and cereals without harming our health.

Breastfeeding Alternative Healthy Organic Infant Milk Formula Recipes

by Djehuty Ma'at-Ra

Many females in the U.S. are becoming health conscious and learning about the importance of breastfeeding (which is really a natural function for the majority of females, if not all females), which is a very good thing and I applaud every last one of these women.

Breastfeeding is the natural way a baby derives nutrition and bonding (emotional, etheric, psychological, physical, etc.) from its mother. The nipples do not just allow milk to be obtained, but energy as well, as both nipples have chakras. These nipple chakras store all the information a mother has for her baby. Chakras are diskettes of information so a baby receives maternal information from the nipples of the breast as well as nutrition in the form of milk.

It is for this reason synthetic milk (derived from animal milk) should not be given to any child, especially the child of a conscious parent. Mother's breast milk has EVERY single nutrient a newborn baby needs and requires and no other milk comes close (except for the alternative milks described later on in this article).

It is errant to give a human baby cow's milk. The first thing that physically develops in a human baby is the brain, whereas the first thing to physically develop in a baby cow is the skeletal structure and system. So why give a human baby cow's milk? Do you see how crazy and errant this is? Why are you giving your baby milk that is conducive to skeletal development as a biological first priority when your human baby requires milk that is conducive to neurological development as a biological first priority?

Mother's breast milk is loaded with nutrition: minerals, trace elements, essential fatty acids, amino acids (protein), so-called vitamins and B-vitamins, and most importantly of all: LOVE!

When a baby breastfeeds from day one, it receives COLOSTRUM that helps to boost and fortify the baby's defense system or so-called "immune" system. Actually, it is mother's colostrum that activates the baby's immune system. Mother's breast milk has the activating code for the baby's immune system.

Breastfeeding also helps to strengthen the baby's aura. When a woman breastfeeds her baby, it strengthens her aura as well as the baby's aura. In fact, when and while breastfeeding, mother and child actually share the same aura. This is why a woman must keep herself energetically or vibrationally clean and pure so as not to taint her baby's aura or even her breast milk, as all thought and emotion is chemical and registers a chemical reaction So always keep calm and have positive thoughts and emotions while breastfeeding. Trust me, this is vitally important!

Many babies that breastfeed from a toxic mother can develop jaundice, hepatitis, or colitis predicated upon the emotions that result in these diseases. When a woman stores anger and rage, they will store in the liver (of mother and eventually the baby) and manifest in the baby as jaundice or hepatitis, diseases of the liver. The feeling of not being able to "stomach" something or being "tired of this s-h-i-t!" will store in the intestines of mother and baby and may manifest in the baby as colitis.

Truly, breastfeeding is an art, craft, and science!

Now I know that due to residing in the Matrix (world of man), many women or new mothers cannot breastfeed for as long as they desire or need to due to having to return back to work, especially for financial reasons as the Rulers have the majority of people existing on survival mode, which they do on purpose for control purposes; and having to abruptly return back to work creates a serious dilemma for a mother and is very traumatic for a baby.

Number one, it adversely impairs the bond and symbiosis between mother and baby. A sense of loneliness overtakes the baby creating shock that may stay with the baby for its entire life due to impairing the Base and Sacral chakras.

Number two, it prevents the baby from getting its necessary nutrition it needs and requires.

Now isn't this tragic? What kind of society do we reside in here in the U.S. where we value work and money over human health requirements?

Most corporate jobs under U.S. law only allow a woman six (6) weeks off for maternal leave (some jobs may grant a longer time); but still, a baby requires at least one (1) year on the breast. But corporate jobs will not tolerate a mother being off of work that long of a period to properly rear (which includes nurturing) a child. Corporate profits are just too important!

I think a good idea would be to allow an optional and voluntary maternal leave account to be set up whereby corporate women can have premiums deducted from their salary to go into this account so when the time comes for maternal leave, funds can come out of this account to pay for a woman's maternal leave (in addition to disability payments). Women (mothers) still have to eat and live while nurturing a child.

I know a woman can apply for disability while out of work for maternity purposes, but do we have to call it "disability"? I mean, is a woman really disabled because she's performing a natural function of nurturing a child? The money should come from the State (from a woman's premiums to State disability/unemployment: EDD) under a different name in my opinion.

A person is truly adversely affected on a subconscious level when they constantly say or tell someone that they are on or receiving "disability." This term or word disables the body on many different areas whether people know it or not. The same thing applies for terms such as "general relief", "unemployment", "social security", and "welfare." These are all disempowering words that create dependence, unaccountability, and irresponsibility and keep people on survival mode.

These words supra also cause energy leakages of the Third Chakra (Solar Plexus) that houses qualities or attributes of: drive, ambition, determination, willpower, self-esteem, personal sovereignty and empowerment.

Government engineers knew exactly what they were doing when they created these words or terms that serves to truly handicap people on a deeper subconscious level. Remember, repetition of a message constitutes mental programming.

Because the money (maternal leave account) would come from the woman's salary, government wouldn't have to pay a dime (though it should as paying women to nurture babies makes a hell of lot more sense than spending billions of dollars to finance bloody wars whereby thousands of people are murdered; and remember, government takes women worker's money via unconstitutional federal income taxation and therefore government is taking much needed money from women (and men) to finance war). But of course, people allow this to happen. Government does and gets away with what its citizens allows and condones. Period!

Okay, so you have to go back to work or maybe you have breastfeeding problems that prevent you from breastfeeding. So what can you do?

Alternative Milks

You can make healthy and wholesome alternative milks for your baby from Nature's fruits, seeds, nuts, and grains such as hemp, rice, almonds, oats, cashews, walnuts, banana, coconut, and dates to name a few. Sea moss (or seaweed) is added for nutritional content and a little maple syrup for sweetness.

GENERAL MILK DIRECTIONS:

NOTE: If using grains, seeds, and nuts, allow them to soak over night.

Add two (2) cups of good water (preferably alkaline or spring water) to a blender.

Take one (1) cup of your milk alternative base, i.e. hemp, almond, rice, cashews, shredded coconut, etc. and add to water in blender.

Add one (1) teaspoon of sea moss or any good seaweed (i.e. Irish Moss, Iceland Moss; these are best to use) to contents of blender.

Add one (1) tablespoon of Grade B or C maple syrup (organic is best) to contents of blender (except if you are using dates for your base as dates are already sweet).

Add a very thin slice of banana (size of a quarter coin) to contents of blender.

Blend all contents of blender for approximately one (1) minute.

Pour contents through a strainer or cheesecloth (so as to only have liquid and no left over pulp substance) in a bowl.

Pour contents (milk) of bowl into a container.

Now you can add as much milk as necessary to a baby bottle for your baby.

SPECIFIC MILK DIRECTIONS

NOTE: Don't worry if "organic" fruits, seeds, nuts, and grains are not available! Use what's available!

TO WARM MILK UP

Never warm up your baby's alternative milk in a microwave oven! Never! These devices are very dangerous! They change the molecular structure of everything that goes into them. Microwave ovens are a big reason why cancer has increased in industrialized nations, especially the United States.

Always rely upon your stovetop to warm up your baby's milk. Use a small non-aluminum/non-Teflon coated pan (like stainless steel pan) to warm up the milk. Don't let the milk get too warm. Just warm enough for the baby to drink (around 98.6 degrees). For this reason, make sure you purchase a thermometer so as to be able to check the temperature of the milk.

The best temperature for the baby's alternative milk is 98.6 degrees because this is your natural body temperature as a human being and when your baby is on the breast, this is the temperature of the milk, so keep the temperature the same with your alternative milk.

I would suggest you mix 3-5 of the above herbs (in cut and sifted form) and make as a tea and drink throughout the day as much as you like.

NOTE: Abstain from consuming herbs of Black Walnut Hulls and Sage while breastfeeding as these two herbs are anti-galactogogue and inhibit the secretion of breast milk. Only consume these herbs if you wish to dry up your breast milk.

Crystal elixirs can also serve as galactogogue agents. The following crystals can be added to a glass of distilled or alkaline water and allowed to sit overnight (preferably exposed to moonlight) and drank later on throughout the day:

Moonstone
Blue Chalcedony
Selenite
Okenite
Pink Chalcedony
Chiastolite (a/k/a Andusalite)

You can drink one ounce once or twice a day. Bottle the rest in a dark colored bottle (amber or cobalt colored) and store in a cool and dark place.

Many females in the U.S. are becoming health conscious and learning about the importance of breastfeeding (which is really a natural function for the majority of females, if not all females), which is a very good thing and I applaud every last one of these women."

Separating factory farm egg production from authentic organic agriculture. A report by The Cornucopia Institute.

The Cornucopia Institute’s report, Scrambled Eggs: Separating Factory Farm Egg Production from Authentic Organic Agriculture, will empower consumers and wholesale buyers who want to invest their food dollars to protect hard-working family farmers that are in danger of being forced off the land by a landslide of eggs from factory farms.

The accompanying organic egg scorecard rates companies that market name-brand and private-label organic “shell” eggs based on 22 criteria that are important to organic consumers. The scorecard showcases ethical family farms, and their brands, and exposes factory farm producers and brands in grocery store coolers that threaten to take over organic livestock agriculture.

CDC and ADA Now Advise to Avoid Using Fluoride

A new study in the Journal of the American Dental Association finds once again that, contrary to what most people have been told, fluoride is actually bad for teeth.

Exposure to high levels of fluoride results in a condition known as fluorosis, in which tooth enamel becomes discolored. The condition can eventually lead to badly damaged teeth. The new study found that fluoride intake during a child's first few years of life is significantly associated with fluorosis, and warned against using fluoridated water in infant formula.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is of a similar opinion. According to their website:

'Recent evidence suggests that mixing powdered or liquid infant formula concentrate with fluoridated water on a regular basis may increase the chance of a child developing ... enamel fluorosis.'

Sources:
Journal of the American Dental Association October 14, 2010; 141(10):1190-1201

CDC May 28, 2010

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

It was 2007 when the American Dental Association (ADA) first warned that parents of infants younger than a year old "should consider using water that has no or low levels of fluoride" when mixing baby formula, due to concerns about fluorosis.

Now the Journal of the American Dental Association has published a study that found increased fluorosis risk among infants who were fed infant formula reconstituted with fluoride-containing water, as well as used fluoridated toothpastes.

The authors noted:

"Results suggest that prevalence of mild dental fluorosis could be reduced by avoiding ingestion of large quantities of fluoride from reconstituted powdered concentrate infant formula and fluoridated dentifrice."

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also followed suit, warning on their Community Water Fluoridation page that mixing powdered or liquid infant formula concentrate with fluoridated water on a regular basis may increase the chance of a child developing enamel fluorosis.

They also state:

"In children younger than 8 years of age, combined fluoride exposure from all sources—water, food, toothpaste, mouth rinse, or other products—contributes to enamel fluorosis."

This is as far as the CDC warnings go, however, and they continue to state that water fluoridation is safe -- and dental fluorosis is only a "cosmetic" problem. In reality, neither of these assertions is true.

Dental Fluorosis is a Sign of Excessive Fluoride Intake

Dental fluorosis results in white and brown spots on your teeth. It is only caused by fluoride -- typically due to ingesting too much fluoride during your developing years, from birth to about 8 years of age. According to the CDC, about one-third of U.S. children aged 12 to 15 years have very mild to mild forms of enamel fluorosis on their teeth.

Promoters of fluoridation say that these markings are "just cosmetic," but it can also be an indication that the rest of your body, such as your bones and the rest of your organs, including your brain, has been exposed to too much fluoride also.

As Dr. Paul Connett, a chemist specializing in environmental chemistry, explained in our recent interview:

"We know that 32 percent of American children have been overexposed to fluoride because you have this telltale sign of dental fluorosis, which in its mildest form is little white specs. But when it gets more serious, it affects more of the surface of your teeth and it becomes colored; yellow, brown and orange mottling of the teeth …

The teeth are the window to the bones. If you've seen the damage to the teeth, what damage can you not see?"

In other words, if fluoride is having a detrimental, visual effect on the surface of your teeth, you can be virtually guaranteed that it's also damaging something else inside your body, such as your bones.

Bone is living tissue that is constantly being replaced through cellular turnover. Bone building is a finely balanced, complicated process. Fluoride has been known to disrupt this process ever since the 1930s.

Why it's Dangerous to Swallow Fluoride

The United States is one of only eight countries in the entire developed world that fluoridates more than 50 percent of its water supply. It is added under the guise that it helps prevent and control tooth decay …

This is in spite of the fact that there never been any demonstrated difference in tooth decay between countries with fluoridated and non-fluoridated water, and no difference between states that have a high- or low percentage of their water fluoridated.

Even promoters of fluoridation concede that the major benefits are topical; fluoride works from the outside of the tooth, not from inside of your body, so why swallow it?

The fluoride added to your drinking water is in fact a chemical waste product! It is NOT something you should use as a supplement to your diet.

There are plenty of studies showing the dangers of fluoride to your health, such as:

Increases lead absorption
Disrupts synthesis of collagen
Hyperactivity and/or lethargy
Muscle disorders
Brain damage, and lowered IQ
Arthritis
Dementia
Bone fractures
Lowers thyroid function
Bone cancer (osteosarcoma)
Inactivates 62 enzymes
Inhibits formation of antibodies
Genetic damage and cell death
Increases tumor and cancer rate
Disrupts immune system
Damages sperm and increases infertility
As far as tooth decay is concerned, this is not caused by lack of fluoride.

Tooth decay is caused by acids in your mouth, typically created from sugar being metabolized by bacteria (Streptococcus mutans), and as you may already know, the number one source of calories in the United States is high fructose corn syrup.

The acid produced then attacks your enamel. Eventually the bacteria can get into the dentine, at which point tooth decay sets in. So there are far better options for decreasing tooth decay than using a topical or ingested poison, with a chief one being minimizing your intake of sugary foods and eating a healthful diet.

You typically don't find dental caries in more primitive societies that do not consume vast amounts of sugar like in the United States.

Make Sure Your Children are Not Exposed to Fluoride

One of dentist Bill Osmunson's main concerns is water fluoridation for infants. The ADA and the CDC now both recommend that infants NOT receive fluoridated water for drinking, nor for making their formula, as fluoridated water contains 250 times more fluoride than mother's milk.

"We shouldn't fluoridate water and harm our most vulnerable," Dr. Osmunson says.

It is my strong belief and recommendation to avoid giving your children fluoridated water.

Unfortunately, the only way to ensure your water is pure enough to drink is by installing ahigh quality water filtration system in your house, such as a reverse osmosis filter that can filter out much of the fluoride and other dangerous water contaminants like disinfection byproducts (DBPs).

Remember that most bottled water also typically contains fluoride, even though it's not stated on the label, and whatever you do, avoid using "nursery water," which is fluoridated water sold specifically for infants.

Fluoride in your drinking water is one more reason why breastfeeding your infant is so essential. Nature has kept breast milk virtually fluoride-free for a reason.

If you are unable to breastfeed and are instead using formula, make sure the water you use is fluoride-free. Again, for now the best way you can provide pure, fluoride-free water to your family is by using a reverse osmosis filter, which you can install in your home.

Even better, if you are unable to breastfeed use this recipe to make homemade infant formula using raw milk and no water at all.

Keep in mind also that if you are a pregnant woman it is equally important for your water to be fluoride-free, as this chemical can harm your developing fetus.

The Ultimate Solution is to Get Fluoride Out of Tap Water

Even though the ADA and the CDC have issued warnings that parents not use fluoridated tap water to make infant formula, neither of them has openly informed the public!

So there are millions of parents out there using tap water to make up formula, oblivious of the fact that the agencies that promote fluoridation in this country have issued a specific warning against using fluoridated water for this purpose.

Not only that, but by fluoridating the municipal water supply you doom many low-income families to fail to protect their young children from this dangerous drug, even if they have this information, as they simply don't have the resources to install a reverse osmosis system.

This is why the only real solution is to stop the archaic practice of water fluoridation in the United States.

The Fluoride Action Network is an absolutely phenomenal resource for further education, and they're doing much to pressure the US government for change. We will be working together to devise a complete game plan to tackle this issue head on. Once we reach the tipping point, which may be as little as 5 percent of the population, we will be able to reverse the policies of water fluoridation.

Our strategy will begin with addressing Canada, because 60 percent of Canada is already un-fluoridated. If we can get the rest of Canada to stop fluoridating their water, we believe the U.S. will be forced to follow.

You can visit www.FluorideAlert.org for the most recent updates and progress, as well as tips on how you can get involved and take action in this important cause.

In addition, I highly recommend getting a copy of Dr. Connett's new book, The Case Against Fluoride, for more information on the bad science and political agendas that got this toxic chemical in our drinking water and is, at least for now, keeping it there.

Get Your Gut Healthy

The adult intestine contains around 2-4 pounds of bacteria. This bacterial load is 10 times greater than the number of cells within our body. In real numbers, since we are about 75 trillion cells we have approximately 750 trillion bacterial cells within our body. It is astonishing to think about our bodies in such a manner, but we are literally living, breathing bacterial reservoirs.

Although we have been trained by society to dislike and often to fear bacteria and other microorganisms, most of those that populate our systems work in harmony with us in what is called a symbiotic, or mutually benefiting, relationship. There are those, however, that are pathogenic in nature and when they are allowed to accumulate in large numbers, bring about distress and disease. The ideal ratio of progenic (life-supporting) vs. pathogenic (disease forming) species is 85:15. When the pathogenic species grow beyond this ratio, problems begin to occur.

Most of the microorganisms in our body work to support us, as they break down fibers and other larger molecules into smaller, more bioavailable nutrients that our cells can utilize. They also help us to eliminate wastes and other toxins.

The gastro-intestinal wall and mesenteric lymph nodes, referred to as the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), normally contain a healthy mucous membrane, which is deeply entrenched with microbes. This region plays a powerful role in immune regulation through a key immunoglobin called secratory IgA. When pathogenic bacteria dominate the region, sIgA levels decline and immune regulation suffers. In addition, toxic waste from the pathogenic species is secreted into the bloodstream, causing a reactive immunological response leading to tissue inflammation. Auto-immune reactions are often triggered through this mechanism.

Probiotics (life enhancing bacteria) are a key inclusion whether it is in your diet and/or through supplementation for immune regulation and overall wellness. Different probiotic species can be separated into adhesive and non-adhesive properties based on their ability to adhere to the mucosal membranes. According to Dr. Bengmark, a leading expert on intestinal microorganisms, "the ability to permanently or temporarily adhere to the mucosal surfaces seems to be important for the optimal function of probiotic bacteria." The greatest health benefits come from the bacterial colonies that are housed in the mucosal membranes. One of these benefits is that they help to strengthen the intestinal wall, preventing unwanted molecules from seeping through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream.

The intake of processed foods, sugars, many pharmaceutical drugs, fluoride, chlorine, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, and other chemicals & industrial wastes destroys the mucosal colonies, causing the intracellular junctions within the intestinal wall to become weak. When this happens, it opens the door for opportunistic infections of pathogenic bacteria, and fungi to take the intestinal reign of power. In addition, large molecules and other toxins are able to easily cross the intestinal cell wall, getting into the bloodstream causing havoc on the rest of the body.

Much of our society believes that yogurt is a great way to reintroduce healthy probiotic strains into our system. However, yogurt primarily contains L. acidophilus, L bulgaricus, enterococcus thermaphilus, and others that are all non-adhesive strains. According to Dr. Bengmark, "Lactobacillus plantarum was the most common bacteria in the food of our ancestors which includes sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles, & brined olives."

L. Plantarum has the ability to adhere and quickly colonize the intestinal mucosa. In addition, it has been shown to compete strongly for food and resources with pathogenic microorganisms, thus minimizing their ability to flourish. In addition, key nutrients such as Omega-3 fatty acids are preserved, and carcogenic nitrates and other toxins are effectively eliminated through the action of L Plantarum.

Magnesium The Most Important Mineral

Very few people are aware of the enormous role Magnesium plays in our bodies. After oxygen, water and basic food, Magnesium may be the most important element needed by our bodies—so vitally important, yet hardly known. Magnesium is a co-factor in activating over 350 different biochemical reactions including energy production, protein synthesis, bone formation, creation of new cells, activation of B vitamins, function and relaxation of muscles, functioning of the heart, kidneys, adrenals, and brain as well as the nervous system. Magnesium also slows bone turnover, the routine breakdown and rebuilding of bone (Journal of Clinical Endocrinology)–important in protecting against bone loss and bone embrittlement. The research of Hans Nieper, M.D, shows that chocolate cravings reduce as the absorption of Magnesium improves the activity of white, granulocytic blood cells, and increases the production of immune-defensive substances and factors that activate specific antibodies.

Factors causing the depletion of the Magnesium in the body are mental stress, coffee, sugar, diet high in sodium (especially ‘table salt'), alcohol, cola-type sodas, tobacco, high perspiration, most medical drugs, low thyroid, diabetes, chronic pain, diuretics, a high-carbohydrate diet, etc
agnesium is even more important than Calcium, Potassium, or Sodium, as it regulates all three of these minerals. Any excess Magnesium is eliminated and so does not build up in the body. However, excess Calcium does builds up in the body and needs Magnesium in order to be assimilated. Once Magnesium is deficient dozens of processes are disturbed, and thus many minerals and nutrients cannot function, causing the body to go out of balance. When we get too low on oxygen, water, or food, the consequences are serious. Yet, Magnesium has not received the ‘press' it deserves, and we often remain unaware of the consequences of a deficiency—which contributes to millions of dollars of needless health expense. It is not the amount of Magnesium you ingest that is the most important thing, but what actually gets utilized. Fibromyalgia Syndrome is now coming under study as a likely Magnesium/Iodine deficiency. Magnesium helps correct such deficiency problems as:

Inability to sleep
Low energy
High blood pressure
Headaches
Heart difficulties
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Body tension
Muscle tension
Irregular heartbeat
Nervousness
Weakening bones
Needless worrying
Bowel imbalances
Organ calcification
Accelerated Aging
Backaches
Tightening of Muscles
Irritability, Fatigue
Swollen, painful joints
Chocolate craving
Bone spurs
Kidney stones
Pre-Menstrual Symptoms
Muscle Cramps

90 – 95% of our population is deficient, or below healthy levels, including many of those who are already using Magnesium! In recommending that 80% of our food be eaten raw, we are obtaining good Calcium from our diet. However, few common foods are a good source of Magnesium—mainly Almonds, Cashews, Brazil nuts, Baked beans, Molasses, and dark green leafy veggies. America has the highest rate of pasteurized milk consumption with the highest calcium supplement consumption, and yet has the highest rate of osteoporosis, calcium loss and bone fragility! Why?

First because the amount of Magnesium required by the body is greater than most people think. For example, when too much Calcium is consumed for the amount of Magnesium being absorbed, the Calcium will pull Magnesium out of body parts to help it be assimilated, or the body may ‘store' the unassimilated Calcium, and this creates other problems such as bone spurs. Excess Calcium in the body also results in Calcium deposits throughout various organs (calcification of organs and tissues). The joints are about 75% water and if a person is chronically dehydrated, the body will draw moisture from the joints and then, when lacking Magnesium, will be able to store the unused Calcium in those ‘empty joint pockets'.

Secondly, most Magnesium capsules and tablets are not completely absorbed by the body. A major problem with Magnesium is the inability by the body to readily absorb it when it is not within a plant (as with Avena's Minerals) or in an ionic form. It is not simply a question of ‘is it organic or inorganic', but ‘does it get absorbed or not get absorbed' or ‘how much of it stays within the body' ( Creighton University Medical School , Omaha , NE ). The biologically active form of this mineral (known as ionized Magnesium) can transfer right into the cells, without the need of any body function other than absorption, and thus will show a lower blood level of Magnesium—taken orally there is no worry about absorption. Liquid ionic Magnesium handles the Calcium and helps the body to gradually dissolve excess or stored Calcium. It can be taken on its own without side effects or negatives, as the body utilizes Magnesium and Calcium through its ion channels.

Nobel Prize winners Edwin Neher and Bert Sackman, M.D, were able to prove in 1991 that ionic channels exist within human cells. They state that “An ion channel is like a tunnel running from the inside of a cell to the outside. Cells communicate with one another using the 20 to 40 ion channels that each cell has in its property” thus making it possible for intracellular components, such as Magnesium Liquid Ionic Ô to be utilized effectively. Robert Recker, M.D, further proved that Calcium and Magnesium are absorbed within the body via an ionized form.

Wm D Snively Jr, M.D, states in his book, The Sea Within, “We begin life as a jellyfish and end it as coral.…We begin life soft, moist and flexible, we end life hard, dry, and rigid.” Our soft tissue becomes partially calcified due to lack of Magnesium to facilitate Calcium absorption.

In his book, Chemistry and Biochemistry of Calcium , W G Robertson stresses the importance of the difference between ionic and non-ionic forms for health benefits. This difference is very important because our bodies recognize, utilize, and metabolize ionic forms. If the Magnesium is not in plant form or in ionic form, the body tries to ionize it in the stomach–which involves proper gastric-acid levels for metabolizing and digesting—with very limited success in changing it into an ionic form. Over 1200 people in the study by Grossman and Kirsner (involving the Veterans Administration Centre, the UCLA Medical Centre CA, and the U of Chicago, IL) demonstrated that with age, levels of gastric acid in both men and women significantly reduce—many stomachs have a hard time digesting anything, let alone ‘stone or rock-type' nutrients.

Natural Cures for Fluid in the Lung

By Megan Smith, eHow Contributor
updated: August 14, 2009

Relieve Fluid in the Lungs Naturally
Fluid in the lungs, also known as pulmonary edema or lung water, is an illness that should be treated by a doctor if it cannot be treated at home. In some cases, however, steam inhalation combined with the matchstick remedy along with drinking plenty of water and taking vitamins like Vitamin C and B12, can cure fluid in the lungs, especially if it is in the beginning phase of the disease, when you may be suffering with a rattling cough and difficulty breathing.

Steam Inhalation
Fill the kitchen or bathroom sink with hot water and place two chamomile or peppermint tea bags in the water. If your water heater does not allow for very hot water, fill the sink halfway with hot water from the tap, then fill the rest of the sink with boiling water heated in a pot or kettle on the stove. Place a bath towel over your head and use your hands to seal the corners off where the towel meets the edges of the sink. Lean over and inhale the steam in deep breaths as it rises from the warm water. Continue inhaling the steam until the water has cooled completely. Repeat every three to four hours as desired, until fluid and symptoms have subsided.

The Matchstick Remedy
The matchstick remedy is a way for the body to get sulfur, which improves respiratory infections and symptoms of nausea. Drop two lit matches into a glass of water, so the flame is extinguished right as they hit the water. Pour the water and the matchsticks into a container and seal. Shake the container well for 30 seconds. Drink a tablespoon of the liquid, and repeat three times a day until your cough and fluid in your lungs has subsided.
Forum on Matchstick remedy
"Later on I refined the way to make this remedy which I consider is a One-Composite-Remedy.

1. Hold a matchstick near a cupful of water, burn it with other matchstick and immediately dip the burning head (make sure it is still in the process of being ignited). Repeat this step with another matchstick.

2. Put the water in a one liter plastic bottle but half empty so we can shake it up vigorously. It gets difficult to shake water if bottle is almost full. Add two whole unburned matchsticks in the same water. Close the lid and shake the bottle vigorously for at least 50 times.

3. Medicine is instantly ready. Take a small spoon of water as remedy. Repeat the dose only if needed. You can remove both burned and unburned 4 matchsticks after two days and store the liquid in refrigerator to avoid the fermentation.

This remedy is safe for children but use only one drop in the water. Do not overuse it.

A matchstick contains following things.

1. Sulphur
2. Phosphorous
3. Potassium Chlorate
4. Potassium Carbonate (as flame retardant)
5. Carbo Vegetabelis (burnt heat)
6. Phosphoric Acid (When still ignited matchhead is dipped in the water)"

When to See a Doctor
If you are running a high fever, have difficulty breathing and taking in oxygen, can't sleep at night, are coughing up green or bloody phlegm or you are experiencing swelling in your body or a body rash, contact your doctor immediately. These symptoms, in conjunction with fluid in the lungs, are a sign that the infection has gotten serious. If you cannot make a doctor's appointment that day, go to the emergency room as soon as possible. Your doctor will most likely give you an antibiotic like Zithromax that you should take until the dose is completely finished, even if you are feeling better before that.

Do You Have Any Idea of the Chemicals Used in Fast Food Chicken

The Chicken Which Should be Banned
Posted By Dr. Mercola | November 08 2010 |

Do you put dimethylpolysiloxane, an anti-foaming agent made of silicone, in your chicken dishes?

How about tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), a chemical preservative so deadly that just five grams can kill you?

These are just two of the ingredients in a McDonalds Chicken McNugget. Only 50 percent of a McNugget is actually chicken. The other 50 percent includes corn derivatives, sugars, leavening agents and completely synthetic ingredients.
Organic Authority helpfully transcribed the full ingredients list provided by McDonalds:

"White boneless chicken, water, food starch-modified, salt, seasoning (autolyzed yeast extract, salt, wheat starch, natural flavoring (botanical source), safflower oil, dextrose, citric acid, rosemary), sodium phosphates, seasoning (canola oil, mono- and diglycerides, extractives of rosemary).

Battered and breaded with: water, enriched flour (bleached wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), yellow corn flour, food starch-modified, salt, leavening (baking soda, sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium aluminum phosphate, monocalcium phosphate, calcium lactate), spices, wheat starch, whey, corn starch.

Prepared in vegetable oil (Canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil with TBHQ and citric acid added to preserve freshness). Dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent.
"

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

There's no doubt about it. Processed food like that from McDonald's is just not part of a healthful diet – in fact, much of it cannot even pass for real food.

After reviewing the above article I am very grateful I can say I have never had a Chicken McNugget from McDonald's. If you can't say the same at least you can commit to never having another one again.

This sentiment was echoed by Federal Judge Robert Sweet in a lawsuit against the restaurant chain back in 2003 when he said:

"Chicken McNuggets, rather than being merely chicken fried in a pan, are a McFrankenstein creation of various elements not utilized by the home cook."

At the time, Time Magazine reported that Judge Sweet "questioned whether customers understood the risks of eating McDonald's chicken over regular chicken."

That was seven years ago, and I still wonder whether or not McDonald's customers truly understand the risks they take when consuming fast food on a regular basis.

If you missed Morgan Spurlock's documentary Super-Size Me, I highly recommend you watch it with your entire family. It's a real-life illustration of just how dangerous – life threatening, in fact – an excessive fast food diet can really be. And "excessive" consumption is likely far less than you imagine: Eating fast food just twice a week DOUBLES your risk of developing insulin resistance, compared to eating it just once a week, for example. Insulin resistance, as I've discussed on many occasions, is one of THE primary driving factors behind most of the diseases we currently struggle with, from diabetes to cancer and heart disease...

The truth is, McDonald's fare contain non-food ingredients that can seriously harm your health.

This shouldn't come as any great surprise. After all, how healthful can something be that shows no signs of decomposing after being left on a counter for more than a decade?

Clearly there's more chemicals in there than actual, real foodstuff.

Chicken McNuggets: "Made With White Meat"... and What Else?

According to McDonald's, their chicken nuggets are "made with white meat, wrapped up in a crisp tempura batter." But as the article above shows, these chicken nuggets are a far cry from what you might expect, based on that description.

About half of it is actual chicken. The rest is a mix of corn-derived fillers and additives (most likely genetically modified), along with a slew of synthetic chemicals, including:

Dimethyl polysiloxane, a type of silicone with anti-foaming properties used in cosmetics and a variety of other goods like Silly Putty
Tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), a petroleum-based product with antioxidant properties
The latter, TBHQ, is typically listed as an "antioxidant," but it's important to realize it is a SYNTHETIC chemical with antioxidant properties – NOT a natural antioxidant.

The chemical prevents oxidation of fats and oils, thereby extending shelf life of processed foods. It's a commonly used ingredient in processed foods of all kinds, but you can also find it in varnishes, lacquers, pesticide products, as well as cosmetics and perfumes to reduce the evaporation rate and improve stability.

At its 19th and 21st meetings, the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives determined that tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) was safe for human consumption at levels of 0-0.5 mg/kg of body weight. However, more recently, the Codex commission set the maximum allowable limits up to between 100 to as much as 400 mg/kg, depending on the food it's added to. (Chewing gum is permitted to contain the highest levels of TBHQ.)

That's quite a discrepancy in supposedly "safe" limits!

So, is the safe level zero, or 400 mg/kg? Who knows?!

According to A Consumer's Dictionary of Food Additives, one gram of TBHQ can cause:

Nausea
Vomiting
Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
Delirium
Sense of suffocation
Collapse
Based on animal studies, health hazards associated with TBHQ include:

liver effects at very low doses
positive mutation results from in vitro tests on mammalian cells
biochemical changes at very low doses
reproductive effects at high doses
The good news is that it is not suspected to be a persistent toxin, meaning your body is probably able to eliminate it so that it does not bioaccumulate.

REAL Food "Lives" and "Dies"

I recently commented on the curious ability of McDonald's food to remain impervious to degradation. It's as if the food has been embalmed to stay "fresh" forever! After sitting on a shelf for 14 years, the hamburger bun has yet to develop a single trace of mold. It's barely even begun to shrivel...

Folks, these buns bear absolutely no resemblance to real bread, and when you read the list of ingredients, this mysterious mummification feature becomes less of a mystery.

Here are just a few of the ingredients in a McDonald's hamburger bun:

calcium sulfate (aka Plaster of Paris)
calcium carbonate (Antacid medication)
ammonium sulfate (According to MSDS,“harmful if swallowed”)
ammonium chloride (Causes irritation to the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea)
calcium propionate (Preservative)
sodium propionate (Mold inhibitor)
Always remember that wholesome, health-promoting food is "live" food, and the hallmark of live food is the fact that it will decompose.

The fact that these burgers, buns, and fries do not decompose, even after a decade or two, is a clear sign that it's just not real food, and should not be part of your diet.

You Are What You Eat...

The bottom line is that if you want to stay healthy, and keep your children healthy, you have to avoid fast food and other processed foods, and invest some time in your kitchen, cooking from scratch. Reclaiming your kitchen is part and parcel of healthful living, so you know exactly what you're putting in your body.

Ideally, you'll want to consume as much whole, raw, organic and/or locally grown foods as possible. That's one of the major reasons why vegetable juicing works so well – you're consuming living raw food!

Most vegetables also have very low carbohydrate levels that minimally disturb insulin metabolism – another important trait of a healthful diet -- but there is something very special about vegetable juicing and eating live raw foods in general.

In addition, I believe optimal health is also largely dependent on eating the right foods for your nutritional type. I think this is such an important part of an optimal diet that I am now offering the entire Nutritional Typing program to you for free.

If you're "hooked" on fast food and other processed foods, please review my recent article How to Wean Yourself Off Processed Foods in 7 Steps. If you're currently sustaining yourself on fast food and processed foods, this is probably the most positive life change you could ever make.

And if you have children, remember that feeding your children home cooked meals can have far reaching benefits, extending even to your future grandchildren. Yes, that's right! It is now well known that dietary changes can prompt epigenetic DNA changes that can be passed on to future generations. For instance, pregnant rats fed a fatty diet had daughters and granddaughters with a greater risk of breast cancer.

Making wise food decisions can literally "override" genetic predispositions for disease.

If you need help determining what foods are actually healthful and which are not, please review the shopping guidelines listed at the end of this recent article.

FDA Bans Hyland's Homeopathic Teething Tablets

FDA Bans Hyland's Homeopathic Teething Tablets
The FDA is stealing your right to use safe products. Remember, the FDA says you have no right to health—and they mean it.

by Heidi Stevenson

he FDA's goal of making the world safe for Big Pharma is made obvious by their attack on a product for which the possibility of harm is so far-fetched that it's laughable: Hyland's Homeopathic Teething Tablets. Well, it would be laughable if it weren't for the fact that an exceptionally safe product that's been used by thousands to ease their children's teething pains is now gone.

I was alerted to the ban on Hyland's Homeopathic Teething Tablets by JacQue Hawkins-Howard, who hoped that it wasn't true. Sadly, it is. JacQue's unsolicited testimonial for the product—"I use Hyland's products and their teething remedy. It was wonderful!"—isn't the FDA's concern. Their concern is that safe and effective products like it interfere with the sales of pharmaceuticals and the profits of doctors, because they don't see as much money from JacQue and other patients who successfully manage their own health.

Proof of the FDA's Dishonesty

In its attack on Hyland's, the FDA clearly stated:

The FDA has not evaluated Hyland’s Teething Tablets for safety or efficacy.
So, without any proof of any sort—not even an attempt to find any proof—the FDA decided that Hyland's Teething Tablets should be banned. They don't even provide any estimate as to the amount of the product that would have to be ingested to cause harm. That, of course, is because they don't care.

Not one shred of evidence is given that the product is dangerous, which isn't surprising, because it would take an incredible quantity to cause even the mildest adverse effect. Yet, the FDA panders to fear by suggesting that parents consult with a "health care professional if their child experiences symptoms such as seizures, difficulty breathing, lethargy, excessive sleepiness, muscle weakness, skin flushing, constipation, difficulty urinating, or agitation after using Hyland’s Teething Tablets."

They imply that children have been harmed because they've "received reports of children who consumed more tablets than recommended". Notice that they don't say how many, nor do they even try to indicate whether they've found any connection between the tablets and the possible symptoms. Here's why:

It would take ingestion of at least a thousand tablets by a ten-pound child to see even the first hint of a negative response. That's at least six bottles—and even this is an extremely conservative figure.
The FDA's Targeting of Belladonna

Many pharmaceuticals utilize a Belladonna derivative, atropine, as an antispasmodic. A typical potency is 0.4 - 0.8 milligrams per pill(1). In this form, it can be effective, but it also carries serious risks. In contrast, the amount of Belladonna in the Hyland's formulation is a mere 0.0002 milligrams per pill. A single pill of the pharmacy formulation is 2,000 to 4,000 times stronger!

Hyland's Homeopathic Teething Tablets Ingredients

Here is the full list, quoted from Hyland's website, of the banned product:

Formula: Calcarea Phosphorica 3X HPUS - supports dentition
Chamomilla 3X HPUS - for irritability
Coffea Cruda 3X HPUS - for wakefulness and diuresis
Belladonna 3X HPUS (0.0003% Alkaloids) - for redness and inflammation
In a base of Lactose (milk sugar) NF.(2)

Available in bottles of 125 quick dissolving tablets.
Calcarea phosphorica, Chamomilla, Coffea cruda, and Belladonna are all homeopathic preparations in the 3X (US scale) homeopathic potency. That means they have been diluted so that there is less than 1 molecule of each substance per thousand molecules of the solvent—and they're even less concentrated in the final product.

All of these ingredients, when taken at a high enough dose, can be poisonous. However, at this homeopathic potency, any suggestion of poisonous qualities is beyond absurd. One is more likely to die from drinking too much water than to suffer the tiniest amount of harm from this teething remedy.

FDA's Methods

The FDA's first method is intimidation. In the case of Hyland's Teething Tablets, they simply issue a warning to the public. They claimed that the product contains a "potentially toxic" agent, implied, without evidence, that it has caused harm to children, and claimed that an inspection showed "substandard control of the manufacturing operation", though they don't say what was wrong.

Most companies cannot afford the costs involved in fighting the FDA, so most do what Hyland's has done: They acquiecse. Naturally, they're hoping that will be the end of it—but history has not shown that to be the case. As has been happening to raw milk producers and distributors, once the FDA has you in their sights, your chances of survival are slim.

That, of course, is why the FDA goes after small companies and single products. For the most part, each action manages to slip under the public's radar, and most companies simply don't believe that they could be the next target. As a result, a mass movement against the FDA hasn't started...yet.

Another Attack on Your Health Freedom

Obviously, this is yet another attack on your health freedom. The FDA is targeting individual companies, picking them off one by one. Your health is the last thing on their agenda.

If your health were their concern, the FDA would go after the makers of products like the fake butter flavoring of most popcorns, which causes brochiolitis obliterans, a disease that steals people's breath, in employees of factories that make it. They took months to take any action against the battery egg manufacturers who poisoned dozens, and those two companies are still practicing without obstruction.

Instead, the FDA goes after raw milk and a harmless homeopathic compound that soothes teething babies and eases the stress it causes their families. There can be no doubt that the FDA is serving its masters, Big Pharma. The idea that the people are their masters is just so...quaint.

Dr. Hotze Blog Archive The Miracle of Magnesium

THE MIRACLE OF MAGNESIUM

Every day I hear another magnesium success story. My editor for the UK edition of The Miracle of Magnesium told me that as soon as she read my manuscript she gave magnesium to a friend who had severe muscle cramps. Her friend had visited several doctors and nobody could diagnosis her condition or offer her relief. Magnesium helped her immediately. My book agent’s brother can’t believe how much his energy has improved on magnesium and his wife’s menopausal symptoms are lifting since she began taking supplements.

And every day I also hear distressing stories about magnesium deficiency. Just today walking along the beach near my home I met an 80-year old gentleman who asked me to sit and talk. Julius said he used to walk up and down the beach like me but now his arthritis prevented him. But he said he only began having symptoms of arthritis after taking medication for slightly elevated cholesterol. Instead of a diet and magnesium, his doctor immediately put him on a cholesterol-lowering drug. When he began developing pain, which was obviously from the drug, instead of stopping the drug and giving magnesium to lower cholesterol, to help detoxify the drug, and also lessen muscle cramps, his doctor gave him a strong pain medication. And then his ankles began to swell and Julius said his doctor gave him a diuretic!

And so the story goes, one drug causing symptoms that demand another drug. That’s what doctors learn about in medical school: drugs. They don’t learn about diet and nutrients, so it seems that all they know how to do is prescribe drugs. Julius said he was going to tell his doctor to change his cholesterol medication, which, by the way, in several years had only dropped his cholesterol of 205 to 185. I told him to go on a cholesterol-lowering diet and take magnesium. Even though Julius said he was mad about having to take the drugs and he wished he had been given a diet in the first place, Julius said he would have to ask his doctor before taking the magnesium. And my heart sank, because his doctor probably didn’t learn about magnesium supplementation in medical school and would probably say it’s unnecessary.

Doctors know potassium deficiency is a danger for people on diuretics but they don’t acknowledge that magnesium is also flushed out in equal measure. Magnesium deficiency goes undiagnosed and unrecognized because until recently there was no accurate blood test for magnesium*. Patients are warned to take potassium supplements or eat oranges and bananas, but no advice is given about magnesium. Magnesium is not as readily available as potassium; it’s deficient in the soil and most fertilizers don’t contain magnesium, so most foods are lacking. Also cooking and processing foods depletes magnesium. It’s found in whole grains, greens, nuts and seeds, but most people don’t eat much, if any, of those foods.

And yet, for some reason doctors think that we get all our nutrients in our very SAD, Standard American Diet and they don’t recognize the need for nutrient supplementation. It all stems back to a medical education that is funded by drug companies that have no vested interest in promoting nutrients. Vitamins and minerals can’t be patented and are relatively inexpensive. My research for The Miracle of Magnesium reminded me that all the metabolic processes in the body, ALL OF THEM, depend on vitamins and minerals, which act as necessary co-factors. Magnesium itself is a co-factor and responsible for the function of 325 enzymes; is an absolute requirement for calcium to be incorporated into bone; keeps toxic chemicals out of the brain; dances with calcium to create nerve impulses and muscle impulses; keeps muscles relaxed, including the heart and blood vessels, and triggers dozens of health conditions if it is deficient.

The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for magnesium is between 350 and 400 milligrams per day, which is just enough to ward off outright deficiency. But for optimal health and for the twenty-two conditions that are triggered by magnesium deficiency, perhaps twice as much magnesium is needed. One of the highest sources of magnesium is kelp, but one tsp. only has about 30 milligrams. One tablespoon of almonds has 33 milligrams. Because we probably don’t get nearly enough magnesium from out diet we have to investigate magnesium supplements.

I use several types of magnesium. However, I stopped using magnesium oxide in 2005 when I read a study that showed only 4 percent of the oxide form of magnesium is absorbed. That’s why magnesium oxide is a great laxative but if you want to stock up on magnesium you need to use other forms. I use magnesium citrate and magnesium taurate and also spray on magnesium oil after a shower. Magnesium oil is supersaturated magnesium chloride and because it’s used topically it doesn’t cause a laxative effect. And I find it really does work. I seem to have a very high requirement for magnesium and to get enough by mouth I can have a laxative reaction—but if I use magnesium oil, I only need to take half the amount of magnesium by mouth and therefore avoid loose stools.

You also have read labels when you buy magnesium products. For example a label may say magnesium taurate, or magnesium citrate, or magnesium glycinate, 500 milligrams, but when you look at the fine print on the back of the bottle you will notice the actual amount of magnesium is much less. The actual amount of magnesium in 500 mg of magnesium glycinate is 50 mg. Companies that make chelated minerals like magnesium glycinate and magnesium taurate claim that chelates are more readily absorbed. That may be the case, but how you tell is if they have less of a laxative effect.
The best way to tell if you are getting enough magnesium is the “bowel test”. You know when you have too much magnesium when your stools become loose. This, in fact, may be a blessing for people with constipation and is one of the many ways magnesium deficiency manifests. But, if you are like me and still get a Charlie horse or a heart palpitation when you don’t have enough magnesium, then reach for the magnesium oil.

The only contraindications to magnesium are caused in people with outright kidney failure, bowel obstruction, Myasthenia gravis, or heart block. Also, if you have a heart condition you may find that taking magnesium can lessen the need for heart medication and you should be under doctor’s supervision to guide this process.
The following 22 medical areas that magnesium deficiency triggers or causes have all been scientifically proven. However, since the publication of The Miracle of Magnesium, people have sent me magnesium stories that go beyond the following list. I’ve been told that magnesium had caused skin to become smooth, gums to heal, and improvements in sexual response. If you are only able to take one supplement–make sure it’s magnesuim!

Magnesium deficiency triggers or causes the following conditions:
Anxiety and Panic attacks- Magnesium (Mg) normally keeps adrenal stress hormones under control.

Asthma- Both histamine production and bronchial spasms increase with Mg deficiency.
Blood clots- Mg has an important role to play in preventing blood clots and keeping the blood thin-much like aspirin but without the side effects.
Bowel disease- Mg deficiency slows down the bowel causing constipation, which could lead to toxicity and malabsorption of nutrients, as well as colitis.
Cystitis- Bladder spasms are worsened by Mg deficiency.
Depression-Serotonin, which elevates moods, is dependent on Mg. A Mg-deficient brain is also more susceptible to allergens, foreign substances that can cause symptoms similar to mental illness.

Detoxification- Mg is crucial for the removal of toxic substances and heavy metals such as aluminum and lead.

Diabetes- Mg enhances insulin secretion, facilitating sugar metabolism. Without Mg insulin is not able to transfer glucose into cells. Glucose and insulin build up in the blood causing various types of tissue damage.
Fatigue- Mg-deficient patients commonly experience fatigue because dozens of enzyme systems are under-functioning. An early symptom of Mg deficiency is frequently fatigue.

Heart disease- Mg deficiency is common in people with heart disease. Mg is administered in hospitals for acute myocardial infarction and cardiac arrhythmia. Like any other muscle, the heart muscle requires Mg. Mg is also used to treat angina, or chest pain.

Hypertension- With insufficient Mg, spasm of blood vessels and high cholesterol occur, both of which lead to blood pressure problems.
Hypoglycemia- Mg keeps insulin under control; without Mg episodes of low blood sugar can result.

Insomnia- Sleep-regulating melatonin production is disturbed without sufficient Mg.
Kidney Disease- Mg deficiency contributes to atherosclerotic kidney failure. Mg deficiency creates abnormal lipid levels and worsening blood sugar control in kidney transplant patients.

Liver Disease leading to liver failure- Mg deficiency commonly occurs during liver transplantation.

Migraine- Serotonin balance is Mg-dependent. Deficiency of serotonin can result in migraine headaches and depression.

Musculoskeletal conditions- Fibrositis, fibromyalgia, muscle spasms, eye twitches, cramps and chronic neck and back pain may be caused by Mg deficiency and can be relieved with Mg supplements.

Nerve problems- Mg alleviates peripheral nerve disturbances throughout the whole body, such as migraines, muscle contractions, gastrointestinal spasms, and calf, foot and toe cramps. It is also used in treating central nervous symptoms of vertigo and confusion.

Obstetrics and Gynecology- Mg prevents Premenstrual Syndrome; prevents dysmenorrhea cramping pain during menses); is important in the treatment of infertility; and alleviates premature contractions, preeclampsia, and eclampsia in pregnancy.

Intravenous Mg is given in obstetrical wards for pregnancy-induced hypertension and to lessen the risk of cerebral palsy and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Mg should be a required supplement for pregnant mothers.

Osteoporosis- Use of calcium with Vitamin D to enhance calcium absorption without a balancing amount of Mg causes further Mg deficiency, which triggers a cascade of events leading to bone loss.

Raynaud’s Syndrome- Mg helps relax the spastic blood vessels that cause pain and numbness of the fingers.

Tooth decay- Mg deficiency causes an unhealthy balance of phosphorus and calcium in saliva, which damages teeth.
